Star anise is commonly used as an ingredient for mulled wine and cider, as well as a component in potpourris and crafts. It has a sweet flavor similar to licorice, and more intense than anise seed. As a spice, it is very popular in both Chinese and Indonesian cuisines, as well as a fundamental ingredient for biryani, masala chai, and Vietnamise pho. Naturally vegan and gluten-free.
