Description

De Arbol Chiles are closely related to cayenne pepper and with a similar level of heat. Very popular in western Mexico, this exceptionally hot pepper is used for its flavor, and is also prized for its bright red color that keeps through the drying process, unlike many chile varieties. For this reason, in Mexican markets is it quite common to find them used in colorful, decorative wreaths. Very popular for making hot sauce, Chiles de Arbol can also be used for stir fries, tacos, enchiladas, and any preparation that could benefit from a kick of heat.
Avoid toasting the dried chiles as they would otherwise generate very spicy fumes when rehydrated. Simply cover the dried chiles in hot water for at least 10 minutes or until supple, then de-stem and, if wanting to reduce the heat level, remove the seeds before either pureeing or chopping them, depending on the recipe. Naturally vegan and gluten-free.
