Description
Whole cloves are handpicked from evergreen trees in hot weather climates all over the world, but are native to Indonesia. These unopened flower buds resemble tiny nails and their English name is from the Latin word clavus, of the same meaning. Cloves have a very intense yet sweet-leaning aroma and flavor, as well as a somewhat numbing effect when ingested whole. They have been used for millennia throughout the world, whole and ground, as a mulling and cooking spice, but also in perfumery, due to their long-lasting and pleasant smell – in fact, together with mint leaves, they were oftentimes chewed on by nobility as an antidote to bad breath. Whole cloves are mostly used to infuse their flavor into a liquid and then removed before serving, such as for mulled cider or wine, broth, spiced tea, or milk and cream for puddings and desserts, but are also used to flavor big cuts of meat, such as hams. You can also grind them and use them for baking or Asian-inspired stir-fries. Whole cloves are also often used for potpourris and crafts: poke them into a whole orange you’ve got yourself and easy, festive, and sweet smelling placeholder. Naturally vegan and gluten-free.
