Description
Jerk seasoning is a complex, slightly spicy, and extremely savory blend that originated in Jamaica. The word “jerk” refers to both a style of cooking and a spice blend influenced by Jamaica’s diverse cultural history, with roots that go back to pre-slavery era West Africa.
Jerk cooking involves drying or grilling meat over open flames. Originally used mainly on pork and goat meat, nowadays jerk seasoning has become a popular seasoning for any kind of meat, especially chicken.
This Jamaican jerk seasoning sports all the key flavors of jerk, including allspice, nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon, ginger, thyme, paprika, garlic, and crushed red pepper. The seasoning can be dry rubbed or combined with water, citrus juice, or even rum to make a paste or marinade. Traditionally, jerk meats are then grilled, but even oven-roasting them will turn the seasoning into a crunchy, savory, and extremely satisfying coat of flavor for the juicy protein underneath. Naturally vegan and gluten-free.
